We're heading into that magical time of the year when we all want to send out our heartfelt wishes to our loved ones. Whether it's a Christmas or Hanukkah card, or maybe a custom gift tag or address label, it's time to brush up on our seventh-grade grammar!
Why Pluralizing Names Correctly Matters
You might be wondering why it's so important to get the plural of a name right. After all, it's the thought that counts, right? Absolutely, but addressing your cards correctly adds a touch of personalization and shows you've put thought into your message. Plus, it's just good manners!
No Apostrophes Needed
First things first, when you're making a last name plural, there's no need for an apostrophe. This is a common misconception, but trust me, adding an unnecessary apostrophe might make your beautiful card or tag look less professional.
Pluralizing Most Family Names
Now, onto the rules. For most family names, all you need to do is simply add an -s to the end. So, if you're sending a card to the entire Smith family, you would write The Smiths. The same rule applies to names like Jackson, turning into The Jacksons.
Exceptions to the Rule
As with most grammar rules, there are exceptions. For last names ending in -s, you add an -es. So, if you're sending a card to the Jones or Douglas family, you would write The Joneses or The Douglases.
Similarly, for last names ending in -x, -z, -ch, -sh, you also add an -es. So, if you're sending a card to the Lopez, Marsh, or Fitch family, you would write The Lopezes, The Marshes, or The Fitches.
